Cornhole Tournament Sets World Record And Makes Wishes Come True

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Nov. 6, 2013 …The Pitchin’ for Wishes Cornhole Tourney, co-hosted by Andrew Roby and Harris Teeter, raised $197,474 for Make-A-Wish® Central & Western North Carolina.

The money will provide hope, strength and joy for as many as 32 children suffering from life-threatening medical conditions. The average cost to grant a child’s wish through Make-A-Wish Central & Western North Carolina is $6,000.

“Pitchin’ for Wishes is always a fun family event, and we’re thrilled its popularity is growing. It enables us to donate more to Make-A-Wish, which in turn helps make wishes come true for more deserving children in our area,” said David McGuire, Andrew Roby chief operating officer.

Make-A-Wish Central & Western North Carolina will grant 237 wishes this year, but there are more than 325 qualified children waiting for their wishes. The organization relies solely on fundraising support from the local community.

“We are in awe that a simple game of cornhole – when put in the hands of creative and passionate people like Andrew Roby’s employees and vendors – can turn into an event that not only sets a Guinness world record, but funds the wishes of almost 100 children in our community,” said Amy E. Brindley, president and chief executive officer of Make-A-Wish Central & Western North Carolina. “It’s a testament to the company’s family values and corporate responsibility to make giving back a priority. Andrew Roby has helped transform our base of support to fulfill our mission.”

The Pitchin’ for Wishes Cornhole Tourney on Sept. 28 at Freedom Park featured an NCAA bracket-style bag-toss competition, as well as food, music and entertainment. More than 600 people attended the family-friendly event, which was the sixth annual cornhole tournament organized by Andrew Roby. The tournaments have raised more than $500,000 for various charities.

The cornhole tournament set a Guinness world record in 2011 and 2012. This year’s tournament broke the previous record of 228 players with an astounding 416 players. The results are in the process of being certified by Guinness World Records™.
